Robert L. Keates began his legal career as a criminal defense attorney, handling a multitude of criminal jury trials and cases from simple assaults and DWI / DUI to complex felonies such as robbery, computer crimes, and drug sales. Unlike many former prosecutors, a profession that requires focusing on how to effectively prove an individual's guilt, Mr. Keates has vast experience in highlighting problems with arrests and missing evidence from a defense perspective. He has never been a prosecutor and has focused solely on how to defend your case. The phrase "knowing the other side of the law" is better viewed from years of experience in the courtroom against the other side, not supporting it.

Robert Keates received his legal J.D. degree from Hofstra University School of Law. After graduating with concentrations in both Criminal Law and Constitutional Law, he obtained his LL.M. Masters of Law Degree in Criminal Law from California Western School of Law, one of only two Universities at the time in the United States that offered such a program.

A few days after receiving his Masters of Law degree, Mr. Keates began working for the Orange County Public Defender's Office in California, where he was immediately assigned to jury trials. Over the years, after gaining courtroom experience and being trained by the best legal minds in the state, he advanced quickly to handle a large caseload of serious felony trials for both adults and juveniles. In 2008, Mr. Keates was awarded the Don Simms Award for 'Attorney of the Year' within the Public Defender's Office.

Mr. Keates is admitted and in good standing to practice law in Texas, California, Federal District of Southern California, New York, and Washington D.C. He is a member of the Austin Criminal Defense Lawyer’s Association, Austin Bar Association,  Texas Young Lawyer’s Association, Orange County Bar Association, California Public Defender’s Association, California Attorney’s for Criminal Justice, Los Angeles Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, District of Columbia Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
